This 2025 Gibson Custom 1968 Les Paul Custom Reissue in Ebony with gold hardware recreates one of the most important Les Pauls Gibson ever built. After disappearing from the catalog during most of the 1960s, the Les Paul Custom returned in 1968, and this Custom Shop reissue captures that distinctive version of the “Black Beauty.”
The combination is classic Les Paul Custom: a deep Ebony finish, multi-ply binding, block fingerboard inlays, split-diamond headstock and enough gold hardware to make subtlety somebody else’s problem. Underneath the tuxedo treatment is a serious player’s guitar, with the substantial construction, ebony fingerboard and dual humbuckers that give a Custom its powerful, immediate character.
What makes the 1968 Reissue particularly interesting is that it isn’t simply a modern Les Paul Custom wearing vintage clothes. It’s built to represent the specifications of the guitars Gibson brought back in 1968, giving it a character that sits apart from both the original 1950s Customs and today’s regular-production Custom.
Serial number 407388, this example was built in 2025 by the Gibson Custom Shop and presents the Les Paul Custom in perhaps its most recognizable form: black, gold, beautifully overbuilt and unapologetically Gibson. It’s equally at home doing thick rhythm work, singing leads or simply sitting in a case looking considerably more expensive than everything around it.
