I’ve always had a soft spot for vintage Strats, and this 1974 has been a fun one to own. I picked it up at a guitar swap meet around 2016, and it has been part of my collection ever since.
The first thing that caught my eye was the finish. While natural, sunburst, and black seem to get most of the attention from this era, someone over the years redid this one in red. It’s a classic-looking Strat that has developed the kind of honest character only fifty-plus years of life can create.
This is an original 1974 Stratocaster with the desirable three-bolt neck and Micro-Tilt adjustment that Fender introduced during the CBS years. I believe the guitar is all original with one exception: at some point the bridge was upgraded. The nice part is that the original bridge is included in the original Fender hardshell case, so the next owner has the best of both worlds. You can enjoy the upgraded bridge while still having the original hardware if originality is important to you.
Like just about every vintage Strat I’ve played from this era, it has that unmistakable Fender sound. The pickups are bright, clear, and wonderfully expressive, with those classic “in-between” tones that made the Strat famous. It does have a little bit of single-coil hum, but that’s simply part of owning a genuine 1970s Stratocaster. If you’ve spent any time around vintage Fenders, you’ll feel right at home. To me, it’s part of the personality of the instrument rather than something to “fix.”
The only reason I’m offering this guitar is because I’ve reached the point where I simply own too many guitars. As much as I’d like to keep every interesting instrument that comes through my collection, I’d rather see this one being played and appreciated than spending most of its time in its case.
Whether you’re looking for a genuine vintage Fender to gig with, add to a collection, or simply enjoy at home, this is a wonderful example of a mid-’70s Strat that still delivers everything people have loved about these guitars for decades.
