Not a store, nor a reseller. I just bought too many great guitars in an effort to find the right ones for me.

Description:

1978 Gibson SG

From Austin at the Trogley Guitar Show:

Hi Larry,
Starting in mid-1977, Gibson introduced what became their main serialization system that is still used today!

YdddYppp
y = year
d= day
p= production number (499 or less = Kalamazoo produced. 500 or higher = Nashville.)

In your case of 71048096

It can be read as the 104th day of 1978, production number 96. Kalamazoo Michigan.

The production number “technically” starts at 000 so it was the 97th guitar neck stamped on that particular day. That isn’t your completion date, there is no way to know that – but should be within a few months of when the neck was stamped

You’ve also provided pot codes. 137yyww is the code on those, where y=year and w=week

In the case of yours, there are no fully readable codes, just 13778xx (last two are covered by solder) – but we can at least double confirm 1978 production. You could remove the solder to read the week of production, but it isn’t really necessary.

Your SG is a bit of a freak though, so I fully understand why you might’ve thought it was earlier haha. I don’t think I’ve seen a ’78 factory-equipped with a Gibson branded bigsby like that. That is more of an earlier 70s 1972-1974 thing. KZ must’ve got a special request or was using up parts!

Otherwise, someone has installed a new (likely coil split) switch and new pickups. Looks like a fun player!
