Built in 1984, this Gibson Explorer Designer Series is a fantastic example of Gibson’s early ’80s willingness to get a little wild with one of its most recognizable designs.
The classic Explorer shape is finished in white with bold blue stripes, giving it an unmistakable period look that could only have come from the era of arena rock, big amps and even bigger guitars. Unlike later examples equipped with a Kahler tremolo, this is the hardtail version, retaining the straightforward feel, tuning stability and solid connection to the body that many players prefer.
Built in the USA, it features the traditional mahogany body and mahogany neck, a rosewood fingerboard with 22 frets, and dual humbuckers for the thick, powerful sound expected from a Gibson Explorer. More than 40 years later, the Designer Series finish makes this considerably more unusual than the typical black, white or natural Explorer, while the hardtail configuration makes it especially appealing to players who want an early ’80s Explorer without a locking tremolo system.
It includes its original case and shows normal signs of use and age appropriate for a vintage instrument. There is some finish checking.
