I owned an early Plexi Marshall back in the mid-1980s. It was finicky and noisy, but when it was dialed in just right, it produced a sound that felt almost alive. I modded mine (what I did is lost to time), and somehow it became even better. It stopped being just an amp and started being my sound. It felt powerful. Personal. Like a voice.
Right around the time that Plexi finally hit its stride, I joined a funk band. They decided the Marshall was “too metal.” So it got exiled to a storage room at Metro Studios in Minneapolis, and they handed me a Mesa-Boogie instead. I never got that Mesa to sound even remotely like my Plexi. Not close. Not once.
Only one person had the key to that storage room. And somehow, without any sign of forced entry, my Plexi vanished. Stolen. Gone. No noise. No broken locks. Just absence. That story deserves its own chapter someday.
I never found it. Never got it back. And I missed it ever since.
I tried replacing it over the years, but nothing ever felt the same. Same model, same era, same circuits… different soul.
Last week, I picked up a Marshall 1959 reissue, loaded with the most common period-correct mods people used to do to those old Plexis. And there it was. Instantly. Like shaking hands with a ghost.
It’s everything I remember. Clear as a bell. A thick, muscular bottom end. A midrange that slices straight through the room. I can ride the guitar’s volume knob from shimmering clean to absolute violence without touching the amp. It breathes. It responds. It feels alive.
And unlike my original Plexi, this one doesn’t hum, buzz, or smell like it’s about to ignite into a small electrical fire at any moment.
Paired with 25-watt vintage Greenbacks, it’s pure joy. Pure memory. Pure electricity.
And yeah… I’m having an absolute ball with it. 🎸🔥
